To the moon!

In 2018, NELMA’s popular Sustainable Versatility Design Awards announced a new challenge for architect and design students: Design a sustainable domicile on the moon made primarily of wood.  Well, it’s happening.  Soft of.

In a recent article titled, “NASA and Japan to launch world’s first wooden satellite” the Times of India website described a collaboration between NASA and Japan’s Sumitomo Forestry to launch the world’s first wooden satellite. The satellite, named “LignoSat,” aims to test the use of wood as a sustainable material in space. It highlights the potential benefits of using wood in satellites, such as reduced environmental impact and minimized space debris. The article outlines the development process of the wooden satellite and its planned launch aboard an Epsilon rocket from Japan’s Uchinoura Space Center.
