Balsam Fir (Abies balsamea)
General Growth Characteristics: Forms a spire to a height 60-70’, Diameter 12-20”, Needles 1” long and flat. Sapwood is whitish to creamy white or pale brown. Heartwood is not distinct. Wood is lightweight and soft. Uses: Lumber, pulpwood. Additional fact: A favored Christmas tree species.
Eastern Hemlock (Tsuga canadensis)
General Growth Characteristics: Height 60-70’, Diameter 2-3’, Short needles are rounded at apex and 1/3 to 2/3” long appearing flat; Cones are small ¾” long. Sapwood is buff to light brown with a reddish-brown tinge to the late wood portion. Heartwood is not distinct. Wood is moderately light and moderately hard. Uses: Construction lumber, pulpwood. Additional facts: Also known as Canadian Hemlock.Eastern White Pine (Pinus strobus)
General Growth Characteristics: Height 70-100’, Diameter 1-3’, Needles 3-5” long in clusters of 5, Cones are long and 4-8”long. Sapwood is nearly white to pale yellowish white. Heartwood is cream colored to light brown or reddish brown turning much darker on exposure. Wood is light and moderately soft. Uses: Furniture, siding, flooring, paneling, and other millwork due to its ease of working and ability to stay in place and hold paint. Additional facts: State Tree of Maine with significant historical usage as ship mast material.Red Pine (Pinus resinosa)
General Growth Characteristics: Height 60-80’, Diameter 2-3’, Soft flexible needles 4-6” in clusters of 2, Cones are egg-shaped and 2” long. Sapwood nearly white to yellowish. Heartwood is light red to orange-brown or reddish brown. Wood is moderately heavy and moderately soft. Uses: Construction lumber, preservatively-treated lumber, poles, flooring. Additional facts: Also known as Norway Pine.Red Spruce (Picea rubens)
General Growth Characteristics: Conical shape, height 60-80’, Diameter 1-2’, Dark green to yellow green needles are 1/2 “ long and sharp pointed. Sapwood is nearly white to pale yellowish brown. Heartwood is non-distinct. Wood is light and soft. Uses: Construction lumber, musical instruments (high resonant qualities), pulpwood. Additional facts: One of three species included in the “Eastern Spruce” grouping (Red, White, and Black Spruce). General Growth Characteristics: Height 50-60’, Diameter to 20”, Needles in starburst clusters of 8 or more, Cones are small ¾” long and light brown. Sapwood is whitish. Heartwood is yellowish or russet brown or sometimes reddish brown. . Wood is moderately heavy and hard. Uses: Construction lumber, posts, poles, crossties, pallet material.
